Speed up your XP to the "EXTREME"

Windows XP is the standard of operating system these days and everybody wants his/ her XP to operate at a speed. Well here are some tips, tricks to speed up your Windows XP

Method 1: Removing visuals and effects

If you are not worried about the graphics and some other effects of windows XP, this method can speed up your Windows XP to a great extent

Right click on My Computer
Choose Properties
Choose the Advanced tab.
From the Advanced tab click the Settings button under Performance.
Select Adjust for best performance, this will uncheck all the options. Now go back and select the following:
- Smooth edges of screen fonts
- Use common tasks in folders
- Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop
- Use visual styles on windows and button

Method 2: Removing Extra Fonts for Speed

Windows XP has over 250 different font variations that it loads for use when the system boots up. Of these 250 variations, only a handful are used on a regular basis. Most likely, you really own use the core Windows fonts such as Tahoma, Times New Roman, Arial, Verdana, Trebuchet, and MS Sans Serif. All of the other fonts can be removed from the fonts folder. As you can imagine, loading over 250 fonts is something that will take the system more time to do. Users who have installed a fonts CD, which usually has hundreds of fonts, on their systems are increasing the amount of work their computer has to do during startup. Simply put, loading a lot of fonts will take more time, since the system has to load and index each font. Thankfully there is a very simple answer to this: Just remove the fonts that you do not use from your font directory.

You can go about removing the unneeded fronts from your font directory in a number of different ways. The best way is to move the unused fonts to a separate folder on your system so that in the event that you ever want to use one of those extra fonts again, you just have to copy it back to the fonts folder.

Caution:
When you remove fonts from your computer you will no longer be able to use them in any software application, including Microsoft Word and Excel.

Before you start removing fonts from your fonts folder, take at look at Table 8-1. These fonts are commonly used, for reasons that the table explains. Be careful not to remove any fonts on which the system normally depends.

Now that you know which fonts you should not remove, you also need to be aware of one more thing before starting your adventure in the fonts folder. Inside the fonts folder there are several fonts with similar names. The fonts are broken up not only by font name but also by the type style. For example, there is an Arial Bold, Arial Bold Itallic, Arial Itallic, etc. When sorting through the fonts to delete, you also can choose to delete only specific types of fonts.

Deleting fonts is fairly easy. But removing the fonts is a little more tricky since the fonts folder is not like a normal folder. In order to remove the fonts, you need to start off by creating folder to put the old fonts in.

Open up My Computer through the icon in your Start panel or from the icon on your Desktop. Navigate to the C: drive or whatever drive on which you have Windows installed.

Next, navigate to the Windows folder (or WINNT folder for some). If along the way you are prompted with a screen telling you that "this folder contains file that keep your system working properly; you should not modify its contents," ignore this message and click the text that says "show the contents of this folder."

Now that you are inside the Windows root folder, create a folder to store the fonts that you are going to remove from the fonts folder. Right-click on the white space that lists the folder and files and select New and then select Folder. Call your folder Fonts Backup or something similar, so that you will be able to identify that this is the place that your old fonts are.

Once you have created the new folder, open it.

Next, go back to the My Computer icon in your Start panel or Desktop and open another window. Navigate to the drive you have Windows installed on and then navigate to the windows folder. Once you are inside the Windows folder, navigate to the Fonts folder.

Now that you have both the Fonts folder open and your backup folder open, arrange the two windows on your screen so that they look like the two windows in Figure 8-5.

Now that the two font folders are side by side, to remove a font from the system, all you have to do is click on the icon in the Fonts folder that you do not want installed any more, and drag the icon over to the backup folder. This will automatically uninstall the font and will copy it to your backup folder.

In the event that you was to reinstall a font, all you have to do is drag the font file from the backup folder back to the Fonts folder. You will see an installation dialog that will flash just for a second as it adds the font back to the library. Once you drag the file back to the Fonts folder, the file will still remain in the backup directory because it just copies it there. After you have confirmed that it was actually installed again, feel free to delete the font file from the backup folder.

Method 3: Disabling Unneeded Services

A service is a software application that runs continuously in the background while your computer is on. The Windows operating system has numerous services that run in the background that provide basic functions to the system. Network connectivity, visual support, and external device connectivity such as printer services are all examples of the types of services that the windows services provide. Each of these services that are running in the background take up system resources such as memory and CPU time. Also, during the booting of the operating system, the service has to be loaded. On most computers, there are nearly 20 services that are loaded upon startup. Of these 20 services only a handful are system critical services. All of the others can be disabled. In order to disable a service, first you will need to know more about what the most common services do. Table 8-2 will help you understand what the most common services are, what they do, and if they can be disabled.

Background Intelligent Transfer Service A service that transfers data in the background when the connection is not in use. One use of this service is to download updates automatically in the background. This service is not system critical but can impair other services such as automatic updates if it is disabled.
Com+ Event System Basically controls the notification of certain system events such as log on and log off. The system event notification is dependent on this service. This service is system critical.
Computer Browser Keeps track of the other computers on your network running the Microsoft Client for networking. This is what provides the list of computers when you are browsing your workgroup computer in My Network Places. This service is not system critical and can be disabled if you do not need the network browsing function.
Cryptographic Services Basically manages system security certificates as well as provides a database of signatures of key windows files. This service is not system critical but it is required to install many Microsoft programs that want to check system file signatures. It is not recommended to disable this service because doing so would not allow Windows Update to run and install new updates.
DCOM Server Process Launcher Basically is in charge of starting various other services. This service is required for RPC which is required for over 39 other services to run. Because of that, it is not a good idea to disable this one.
DHCP Client Provides support for dynamic network configuration. This service is not system critical but is needed for those that do not set their IP address manually.
Distributed Link Tracking Client Keeps track of links to files on a NTFS volume on your computer or across a network. This service is not system critical and can be disabled.
DNS Client Resolves domain names into IP addresses as well as caches lookup results. This service is not system critical but you will not be able to browse the internet without it started.
Error Reporting Service Allows users to report failures of applications directly to Microsoft so that Microsoft may fix bugs in its software if it is the culprit. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled.
Event Log Allows event messages to be recorded to be viewed in Event Viewer. This service is system critical and can not be disabled.
Fast User Switching Compatibility Allows users to switch to other users on the same system without logging off. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled.
Help and Support Used for the help and support center. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled.
HTTP SSL Allows the personal web server built into Windows XP (IIS 6.0) to provide secure data transfers over HTTP. This service is rarely used since most people never even setup the personal web server on Windows XP. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled.
Indexing Service Creates a searchable database of the items on your hard drive. This service is not system critical and can be disabled if you do not search your drive often or can wait a few extra minutes to find a file.
IPSEC Services Provides IP security for certain secure connections over IP. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled.
Logical Disk Manager Detects and monitors new hard disk drives. This service is not system critical but it is used when you are upgrading your hardware and installing additional storage devices or using USB storage devices. If you do not plan on using any of the items above, the service may be safely disabled.
Machine Debug Manager Provides support for program and script debugging. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled for most users.
Messenger Allows users to send text popup messages to computers on the network. This service is abused by spammers to send you advertisements. It is highly recommended that you disable this service.
Network Connections Provides support for network connectivity. This service is not system critical but it is recommended that it is not disabled.
Network Location Awareness (NLA) Provides services to computers that share your internet connection. If you do not use the internet connection feature, then you may safely disable this service since it is not a system critical service.
Plug and Play Allows your computer to detect hardware. This service is system critical and can not be disabled.
Portable Media Serial Number Service Detects the serial number of an external media device. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled.
Print Spooler Provides services to print. This service is not system critical but it is necessary to print from your computer.
Protected Storage Provides basic security over certain system files. This service is system critical and should not be disabled.
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Provides services for other services. This service is system critical and can not be disabled.
Remote Registry (Not included in XP Home) Allows the system registry to be connected to remotely. This service is not system critical and is recommended that it is disabled.
Secondary Logon Allows programs to be started under different accounts. This service is system critical.
Security Accounts Manager A database of local account information. This service is system critical and should not be disabled.
Security Center Monitors your system security settings to notify you if your settings are insecure. You should keep this service running unless you are confident about your computer's security. No other services depend on this service and it can be safely disabled given you have a good handle on your security.
Server Provides the ability to share files and your printer over your network. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled if you do not share file over a network.
Shell Hardware Detection Used to detect external storage devices automatically. If you do not use any external storage devices such as external hard drives or memory cards, this service can be safely disabled.
SSDP Discovery Service Looks for Universal Plug and Play drives on your network. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled.
System Event Notification Tracks more system events. This service is system critical and should not be disabled.
System Restore Service Keeps track of changes made to your system to make restore points. This service is not system critical but it is recommended that it is not disabled.
Task Scheduler Allows users to schedule and configure tasks. This service is not system critical and can be disabled if you do not need to schedule any tasks to run.
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Allows the NetBIOS network protocol to run over the TCP/IP Protocol. This service is not system critical and can be disabled if you have no use for the NetBIOS protocol.
Terminal Services Allows users to connect to the computer with remote desktop. This service is not system critical but is used by the remote assistance help feature. It can be safely disabled if you do not need the remote assistance feature.
Themes This is the service that gives Windows the new look. It allows visual styles to be applied over the normal grey Windows 2000 style windows. This service is not system critical and can be disabled.
WebClient This service adds support for web-based file management for technologies such as WebDav. Most users will never need to use this service. It is not system critical and can be safely disabled.
Windows Audio Provides audio support for the operating system. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled is you would like to give up your sound.
Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Protects your computer from intruders and malicious programs attacking your computer via your Internet connection. It also provides the ability to share your internet connection among other computers on your local network. This service is not system critical but I do not recommend that you disable it unless you have another personal firewall application installed on your computer.
Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Used to acquire data from optical devices such as a scanner or a camera. This service is not system critical and it can be safely disabled if you have no use for it.
Windows Management Instrumentation Provides system information to applications. This service is system critical and should not be disabled.
Windows Time This service is in charge of synchronizing the Windows time. If you do not need to have your time synchronized, this service can be safely disabled.
Wireless Zero Configuration Configures wireless 802.11 devices. If you do not have any wireless hardware installed, you may safely disable this service.
Workstation Allows your computer to make connections to other computers and servers. This service is not system critical but it is needed for any basic networking.

Now that you know which services can be disabled and which services are important to your system, you can safely speed up your boot by disabling the extra services using the services management tool.

Tip:
Before you begin changing your service setup, set a System Restore Point to easily restore your system to an earlier configuration. However, be careful when you restore from restore points. Any applications or files that were created after the system restore point will be deleted when reverting back to an earlier restore point.

The Services utility is included in all versions of Windows XP and but is hidden away. Do the following to disable a service using the Services utility:

Click on the Start menu and select Run. In the text box type services.msc and click OK. This will start the Services utility as shown in Figure 8-6.
Now that you are in the Services utility, you will see a list of a lot of services on your computer. First you will need to stop the service that you want to disable. Right click on the service name and select Stop on the pop-up menu.
When the service is stopped, right click on the service again and select Properties. Located on the General tab, look for the Startup Type drop-down box. Click on the arrow on the drop-down box and select Disabled.
Click on the OK button and from now on, the system will not start the service any more during boot speeding up your system start

To get the maximum amount of performance out of your system, you have the option of disabling all of the services on your computer that are not critical to the system. This would take away a lot of the nice features and conveniences of Windows, but you would have a much faster machine. The following is a list of system-critical services that should not be disabled. Feel free to disable all other services.

What is System Restore?

System Restore is a built in tool in Microsoft’s Windows XP that records your Windows XP system configuration before you install any software on your computer by which you can easily restore your computer to an earlier time. This works like a system-wide undo, letting you fix any problems that a new piece of software or hardware or something else has caused. The changes made by System Restore are completely reversible and changes only your system configurations and not your data. You can configure System Restore to create restore points daily or whenever you install a software in your PC or you can manually create a restore point.

Here are the steps to cofigure and restoring your system with the help of System Restore:

To access System Restore, click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. If your System Restore is turned on and have been creating restore points in the past, you will be presented with a calendar showing you the restore points that are present to restore the system. If not, you can choose to create one before you install a new application.
Oh no! I have accidentally downloaded a spyware and installed it on my computer but my system restore is working, what I do now. In that case go to System Restore and select a restore point that is created on a date that you think is that date before the introduction of spyware on your PC. Remember, this will undo all changes made to your system, including any software updates, though it won't delete documents you've created since the restore point. So be conservative; you can always try again with an earlier restore point.
Once the spyware is removed by the system restore process and you beleive that every thing is right, you should delete your saved restore points so that you don’t inadvertently use System Restore and reinstall the spyware on your PC. To turn off the System Restore process, right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, click the System Restore tab, click the check box next to "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click OK, then repeat the process, unchecking the box to turn System Restore back on so that System Restore is turned on again.
When downloading a software that you think might be a spyware, no problem if you have System Restore configured to create restore points before each install, but if not manually create a restore point before you install. Click System Restore, then Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore, and choose "Create a restore point." Follow the prompts and install the software without any fear. If something goes wrong you can always restore it back to your original configuration by the restore point you created now.

In this article I will show you up how to make an Unattended Windows XP installatin CD so that you can be free of the boring task of inserting the CD key, writing administrator name and many more againa and again. I will show you step by step how to supply Windows XP Setup with all of the information that you the “End User” is prompted to provide during a typical Windows setup in a scripted file called the answer file. The answer file basically fills in the text portion of the setup and can even setup options that you would normally spend most of your day doing after a “typical” or normal Windows install. Even if you do not know the first thing about scripting, Microsoft has generously included the tools you need on your Windows XP CD. If you’re using Windows 2000, you can follow this guide also. The tools are pretty much the same.

So what do you need to make an unattended Windows XP installation CD

A computer with Windows XP installed on it
A CD writer to burn your Unattended Windows XP installation disk onto a CD
A bootable WIndows XP installation CD
Nero Burning ROM

Procedure to make Unattended Windows XP installation CD:

Step 1: Insert your Bootable Windows XP installation CD into your CD drive and copy the entire contents of the disk to a folder in your hard disk.

Step 2: Go to Support>Tools folder on the CD and double click the Deploy.cab file. Copy all the files to a folder on your hard disk.

Step 3: Now the making process starts. Double click the Setupmgr.exe file from the contents of Deploy.cab, which you just copied onto the Hard Drive

Step 4: Customize your answer file.

Welcome to the Windows Setup Manager - This Wizard is going to take us through the options of creating the answer file. Just click next here.

Create or Modify the Answer File - Since this is going to be your first answer file, select “Create a new answer file” and click next. Once you have created an answer file successfully, you can edit it with the Setup Manager by selecting “Modify an existing answer file” and providing a path to it.

Type of answer file to be used:

Windows Unattended Installation - Unattended installations use setup scripts to answer installation questions and to automate the Setup process. This simplifies the installation of the operating system.

Sysprep Install (System Preparation Tool) - Disk imaging, which is also known as cloning. This is a timesaving way to install Windows XP on multiple computers that use identical or similar hardware configurations.

Remote Installation Services (RIS) - Enables you to perform a clean installation of Windows XP Professional on multiple computers throughout a network. You can simultaneously deploy the operating system on multiple clients from one or more remote locations.

For now, we are going to choose the “Windows Unattended Installation” option.

Windows Platform - Which Version of Windows XP are you going to install? For me that would be “Windows XP Professional”.

Run Once - As you can see in the Run Once section it has all ready set up the command to add the printer. There are other commands you could use here also. In the answer file I am creating here I would be setting up the disk partitions manually. If you wanted to have the answer file do it for you, you would add the command for it here also. This would require you to create a new batch file. Once again, you can make this as simple or advanced as you like.

Additional Commands - This is somewhat more of an advanced feature. It allows you to have setup install things that you would normally want to install right after Windows XP. If you desire to venture into it and what it can do for you, Creating a Combination Installation is an example of one way to use this. This would require you to choose different options in the setup manager than we did here. For this article we are going to leave it blank. Now click Finish.

Save the Answer File - Now put in your formatted floppy disk into your A drive. Where it says “Location and file name”, type in A:\winnt.sif. It should look just like the image below. Since we are using the CD Boot method, we must name the answer file winnt.sif. Click OK.

If you do not have a Floppy drive or just want to put it on your Windows XP CD - You will need to save the answer file to your hard drive as winnt.sif. You will be required to make a backup of your Windows XP CD. First of all, you will need to extract the contents of your Windows XP CD to your hard drive. Then you must add winnt.sif to the I386 folder. You will not need to use the batch file (winnt.bat). Don’t forget to add winnt.sif first. After extracting Windows XP from the hard drive you can not just burn it to a CD (it won't be bootable). Follow the instructions at Binks site on How to make your XP bootable. I would also recommend using a CD-RW the first time you try doing this. If you mess something up you will not be wasting your CD-Rs.

Setup Manager Complete - Congratulations! You have now created your first answer file. Here it is telling you that it has created two files for you.

winnt.sif - This is the answer file

Now go to where you saved your answer file. Right click on winnt.sif and open with notepad. You should see something similar to what you see below except that it should your answers instead of mine. If you want to make some last minute changes do so now.

If you like to make multiple partitions on your hard drive you will need to make a minor change to the answer file. In the [Data] section have a look at AutoPartition. With the current setting at one it will automatically choose a partition to install to. This will take away your option to make partitions. If you would rather create your own partitions set the 1 to 0. I recommend you do this if you already have an operating system installed on your computer that you would like to start fresh with or if you want XP to create a dual boot for you. You should have a second partition to do a dual boot.

Now Right click on your winnt.bat file and in the menu click edit. This is a batch file. A batch file is a file containing instructions that are executed one after the other. Notice that in the batch file it tells you that it may need to be modified. You may need to edit the path for setup to find the files it needs. The batch file here says:

1. The answer file is winnt.sif

2. Setup files are located on E:\ (My CD-ROM Drive) in the I386 folder.

3. Tells Setup to begin using winnt32 with a script to tell it to use the unattended method.

If you’re going to be using this on another computer you may have to change the drive letter to whatever the CD-ROM is set at.

Step 9: To burn a bootable installation disc, you need the boot sector of the WIndows XP CD. Download it from here. This file will be used with Nero Burning ROM to create the bootable disc.

Step 10: Launch Nero and select CD ROM (Boot) from the New Compilation dialog box. Under the Boot tab, specify the boot sector file you extracted. Set the emulation as “No emulation” and keep the boot message blank. Most importanly, remember to set the “Number of loaded sectors” as 4.

Step 11: Under the Burn tab, set the write method to disc at once. Click he New Button to begin adding files and foldersto the Windows XP installation disc that you copied to your hrd drive( with the answer file in i386 folder) into the left pane.

Step 12: Insert a blak CD into the optical drive and hit the Burn button.

Wait a few minutes and there you go!

Hide Blogger Navbar From Your Blog

Blogger.com is the most widely used blogger sites aroud the world which is followed by Wordpress. But despite of that there are some limitations to blogger such as limited templates, no categories and many more. But the most often unliked feature of blogger is the “Blogger navbar”.

A Blogger navbar is a 50 pixels small bar placed on the top of your blog throughout the browser window. It has the following butons on it:

The first button on it is of “Blogger Homepage”. Click on it and you are directed to “Blogger.com”
The second is a search button which search “Google Blogs search engine” for the search term

Bypassing Genuine Windows Validation for Internet Explorer 7.0

Download Internet Explorer 7.0 installer from the Microsoft site. You have to choose Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) as your operating system. Remember you can’t install IE 7.0 if service pack 2.0 is not installed in your operating system. And if you are facing genuine windows validation problem while downloading IE7 installer from the Microsoft site, can also download this installer alternatively from here or directly from here.
Extract the downloaded Internet Explorer setup file (IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe) using WinRAR to a directory (IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu).
Download the patched iecustom.dll and then copy-paste it to the update folder (IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu\update\) and click yes when asked to overwrite.
Now, download normaliz.exe . Then copy this exe file and paste it in your “C:\” drive.
Run ‘update.exe’ in the update folder (not iesetup.exe!!!). At the end, you have to choose ‘Restart Later’ (not Restart Now) option to finish the running process of the exe file.
Now you have to download normaliz.dll and then copy-paste it to “c:\windows\system32\” directory (in order to prevent problems with the file not being found after the installation). And then reboot/restart your pc.
After rebooting your pc, you may face a problem with a file called normaliz.dll that can not be found by explorer.exe. If you’re having this problem, you will find your desktop blank.(If you are not facing this problem then just go to step 8) In order to fix this problem, you have to do the following things one by one:
1. Press ctrl-alt-del to go to the task manager.
2. Go to “File -> New Task (Run…)” in the task manager.
3. Type: ‘C:\normaliz.exe’ (excluding quotation marks) in the ‘open’ field and then press the ‘ok’ button.
4. ‘WinZip Self-Extractor - normalize.exe’ window should popped up and then press the ‘unzip’ button.
5. Reboot your pc and yahoo!!! now you can see your desktop contents!!!.
Now you have to run ‘xmllitesetup.exe’ in the update folder. This step is very important, because somehow if you forget to run this ‘xmllitesetup.exe’ , IE 7.0 will be installed in your PC without it's toolbar!!!
Then reboot your pc again, run Internet Explorer…and you are done!!!

Bypassing Genuine Windows Validation for Windows Media Player 11

Download Windows Media Player 11.0 (make sure its the final and latest version, not beta) from the Microsoft Site. Alternatively, you can download the installer file directly from here. Remember you can’t install Windows Media Player 11.0 if service pack 2.0 is not installed in your operating system.
Extract the downloaded Windows Media Player setup file (wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe) using WinRAR to a directory (wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu). Now make sure you have a “LegitLibM.dll” file in the extracted “wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu” folder.

Com+ Event System	Basically controls the notification of certain system events such as log on and log off. The system event notification is dependent on this service. This service is system critical.

Computer Browser	Keeps track of the other computers on your network running the Microsoft Client for networking. This is what provides the list of computers when you are browsing your workgroup computer in My Network Places. This service is not system critical and can be disabled if you do not need the network browsing function.

Cryptographic Services	Basically manages system security certificates as well as provides a database of signatures of key windows files. This service is not system critical but it is required to install many Microsoft programs that want to check system file signatures. It is not recommended to disable this service because doing so would not allow Windows Update to run and install new updates.

DCOM Server Process Launcher	Basically is in charge of starting various other services. This service is required for RPC which is required for over 39 other services to run. Because of that, it is not a good idea to disable this one.

DHCP Client	Provides support for dynamic network configuration. This service is not system critical but is needed for those that do not set their IP address manually.

Distributed Link Tracking Client	Keeps track of links to files on a NTFS volume on your computer or across a network. This service is not system critical and can be disabled.

DNS Client	Resolves domain names into IP addresses as well as caches lookup results. This service is not system critical but you will not be able to browse the internet without it started.

Error Reporting Service	Allows users to report failures of applications directly to Microsoft so that Microsoft may fix bugs in its software if it is the culprit. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled.

Event Log	Allows event messages to be recorded to be viewed in Event Viewer. This service is system critical and can not be disabled.

Fast User Switching Compatibility	Allows users to switch to other users on the same system without logging off. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled.

Help and Support	Used for the help and support center. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled.

HTTP SSL	Allows the personal web server built into Windows XP (IIS 6.0) to provide secure data transfers over HTTP. This service is rarely used since most people never even setup the personal web server on Windows XP. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled.

Indexing Service	Creates a searchable database of the items on your hard drive. This service is not system critical and can be disabled if you do not search your drive often or can wait a few extra minutes to find a file.

IPSEC Services	Provides IP security for certain secure connections over IP. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled.

Logical Disk Manager	Detects and monitors new hard disk drives. This service is not system critical but it is used when you are upgrading your hardware and installing additional storage devices or using USB storage devices. If you do not plan on using any of the items above, the service may be safely disabled.

Machine Debug Manager	Provides support for program and script debugging. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled for most users.

Messenger	Allows users to send text popup messages to computers on the network. This service is abused by spammers to send you advertisements. It is highly recommended that you disable this service.

Network Connections	Provides support for network connectivity. This service is not system critical but it is recommended that it is not disabled.

Network Location Awareness (NLA)	Provides services to computers that share your internet connection. If you do not use the internet connection feature, then you may safely disable this service since it is not a system critical service.

Plug and Play	Allows your computer to detect hardware. This service is system critical and can not be disabled.

Portable Media Serial Number Service	Detects the serial number of an external media device. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled.

Print Spooler	Provides services to print. This service is not system critical but it is necessary to print from your computer.

Protected Storage	Provides basic security over certain system files. This service is system critical and should not be disabled.

Remote Procedure Call (RPC)	Provides services for other services. This service is system critical and can not be disabled.

Remote Registry (Not included in XP Home)	Allows the system registry to be connected to remotely. This service is not system critical and is recommended that it is disabled.

Secondary Logon	Allows programs to be started under different accounts. This service is system critical.

Security Accounts Manager	A database of local account information. This service is system critical and should not be disabled.

Security Center	Monitors your system security settings to notify you if your settings are insecure. You should keep this service running unless you are confident about your computer's security. No other services depend on this service and it can be safely disabled given you have a good handle on your security.

Server	Provides the ability to share files and your printer over your network. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled if you do not share file over a network.

Shell Hardware Detection	Used to detect external storage devices automatically. If you do not use any external storage devices such as external hard drives or memory cards, this service can be safely disabled.

SSDP Discovery Service	Looks for Universal Plug and Play drives on your network. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled.

System Event Notification	Tracks more system events. This service is system critical and should not be disabled.

System Restore Service	Keeps track of changes made to your system to make restore points. This service is not system critical but it is recommended that it is not disabled.

Task Scheduler	Allows users to schedule and configure tasks. This service is not system critical and can be disabled if you do not need to schedule any tasks to run.

TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper	Allows the NetBIOS network protocol to run over the TCP/IP Protocol. This service is not system critical and can be disabled if you have no use for the NetBIOS protocol.

Terminal Services	Allows users to connect to the computer with remote desktop. This service is not system critical but is used by the remote assistance help feature. It can be safely disabled if you do not need the remote assistance feature.

Themes	This is the service that gives Windows the new look. It allows visual styles to be applied over the normal grey Windows 2000 style windows. This service is not system critical and can be disabled.

WebClient	This service adds support for web-based file management for technologies such as WebDav. Most users will never need to use this service. It is not system critical and can be safely disabled.

Windows Audio	Provides audio support for the operating system. This service is not system critical and can be safely disabled is you would like to give up your sound.

Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)	Protects your computer from intruders and malicious programs attacking your computer via your Internet connection. It also provides the ability to share your internet connection among other computers on your local network. This service is not system critical but I do not recommend that you disable it unless you have another personal firewall application installed on your computer.

Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)	Used to acquire data from optical devices such as a scanner or a camera. This service is not system critical and it can be safely disabled if you have no use for it.

Windows Management Instrumentation	Provides system information to applications. This service is system critical and should not be disabled.

Windows Time	This service is in charge of synchronizing the Windows time. If you do not need to have your time synchronized, this service can be safely disabled.

Wireless Zero Configuration	Configures wireless 802.11 devices. If you do not have any wireless hardware installed, you may safely disable this service.

Workstation	Allows your computer to make connections to other computers and servers. This service is not system critical but it is needed for any basic networking.
